Sometimes, taking proper care of your swimming pool will take a back seat to other things in life.
Like so many other newbies that visit my pool blog, you may be new to the whole situation, so you don’t do things correctly.
Perhaps you’ve been testing the water as you should, and things look good, so you slack off on it just a little.
You may even be giving it all you’ve got, and then one day, you look in the pool, and it seems like the pool turned green overnight. I’ve been there, too, several times over the last 10 years.
Don’t be too hard on yourself, though, because this is a scenario that most swimming pool owners will face at one time or another.
Regardless of the reasons, it can be quite a horror to discover that the water in the swimming pool has a greenish color.
The pool water literally seems to have turned green overnight.
Before you set up your pump to drain all the water out of your pool or become frustrated, you need to understand the situation.
Listen, you must stay on top of cleaning your swimming pool.
This is a hard lesson to learn about pool care, yet it isn’t the end of the world. With some hard work and the right pool water treatment, you can get things back under control before you know it.
Check The Filter System
Listen, in many instances, a green swimming pool results from problems with the pool filtering system. So you want to start here and troubleshoot from that angle.
Remove any debris trapped in the filtering system. Pay close attention to how the filtering system sounds and if it is passing water through it as it should. If it is, you can move on to other aspects of cleaning the swimming pool.
You’ll need to let the filter run around the clock for several days to help you. Remember to check it often and to complete the backwash process so it can continue to perform well. Also, watch the pool water level so it doesn’t get below the skimmer, and start sucking air into your pump.
If the filtering system for the swimming pool isn’t working as it should, you’ll need to fix it. Otherwise, your problem will only get worse than it is right now.
Check the entire filtering system and replace the cartridge if applicable. If you need to replace the whole filtering system, get it done immediately, or your swimming pool will become a living ecosystem for bacteria and bugs.
Invest in a high quality swimming pool filter that is the right size for your pool. And get a brand that is reliable to prevent future problems from being likely. You wanted a pool, now you have to pay the piper…
Next, you can move on to cleaning out the pool while you let the filter do its job. Remove any large pieces of debris from the top of the swimming pool. This way, it can’t spread and multiply, making it much harder to remove.
You may need to repeat this process several times over the next few days.
Shock The Pool Then Add Chlorine
While it may be tempting to vacuum the pool, avoid doing so if you can’t see the bottom. The reason is that you don’t know what gunk is built up down there, which could damage your vacuum and your swimming pool pump.
Instead, you must shock the pool water to help eliminate as many bacteria and algae as possible. This should be very effective, and you will see improvements very soon if you haven’t let the problem go too far.
About 24 hours after the shock, you can add chlorine and other chemicals that your swimming pool needs.
Use your pool water testing kit to determine the pH level. That way, you will know what chemicals you need to add.
Give it about 12 hours, and you should see clearer water. Then, vacuum the remaining debris out.
Be patient because it could take up to five days before your swimming pool water is clear again.

If you don’t get results in that time, you may need a specialist to look at your pool. There may be additional problems that are more complicated than you can handle. Or, it could be that your chemicals are ineffective, and you need professional-grade quality.
